Day +229: Bad to the Bone

The third of the one-year anniversaries is today.  Number two was on Saturday – the anniversary of the date I went into the hospital.  I paid homage to the day by going to the shooting range with friends and putting some holes in paper down range.  Therapeutic, for sure.

But one year ago today, was my very first bone marrow biopsy.  Without anesthesia.  Without pain medication.  I remember crying for the entire time, trying to not scream.  The hardest part was not actually when the long needle went through my lower back and into the back of the pelvic bone.  What was worse came after the bone was pierced, and the doctor began to draw the marrow out of my bone.  I could feel it from my back all the way down my leg.  It felt as if she were drawing the nerves out of my body – excruciating.  My mom was with me in the hospital room as the doctor did the biopsy.  She held my hand, stroked my head, and then got light-headed and almost passed out.  She had to sit down on the sofa across the room.  A day neither of us will ever forget.

And a procedure that led to my Leukemia diagnosis.

  1. Oh Tammy, I remember being stunned that they put you through that without putting you out. That was unforgivable!
