Day +180: The (wo)Man in the Mirror

I heard the Michael Jackson song, “Man in the Mirror” this morning as I drove to work.  Nothing really struck me about the song at the time, just a nod to my 80’s teen years.

However, when I went to the ladies’ room around lunchtime, I caught a glimpse of myself in the full-length mirror, and that one phrase of the song came back to me.  While the rest of the lyrics have to do with something completely different than what I was experiencing at that moment, the song resonated just the same.

Today is Day +180.  And the very first day I have felt like myself again – body, mind, and heart – since transplant.  I actually saw the reflection of the “me” I remember before Leukemia, looking back at me in that mirror.  And I *have* changed my way of thinking.  Tonight I go to sleep with a gentle, happy smile . . . completely at peace.

Man in the Mirror, Michael Jackson
