After my itching debacle on day +1 and overnight, I finally got to sleep around 3:30 am. I forget just how many medications my nurse gave me to try and give me relief and sleep, but I was just grateful that the last batch got me a few hours.
I woke up Friday morning (Day +2) around 8:00am, slightly groggy, but feeling so much better. I called home and did Facetime with the boys, and then hung up and ordered breakfast. My stomach has been a little hinky, so I just got something very plain and bland. After breakfast, I got on the bike and rode for 30 minutes (covering 7 miles! Woo hoo!), felt fantastic. I actually was sweating when I was done. Cannot believe how good that felt. I washed and showered and got dressed after that, and then settled in for the afternoon to get some work done for a 2:00 conference call I needed to be on.
Found I was ravenously hungry at lunch so ordered grilled chicken on toasted whole grain bread (about my most favorite thing on the hospital menu, lol). Wolfed that down quickly before my meeting, and dialed in to the 2:00 conference call.
Around 2:30, my nurse came in and hung a medication on my IV pole, and then quietly left the room. Within 15 minutes, I start to feel really weird. Lightheaded, body was flushed and hands and feet on fire and I could not stop itching. As soon as I could, I hung up from the meeting and called my nurse. She gave me an antihistamine for the itching and monitored the other symptoms. Within a couple of hours, I was in such stomach pain and alternately getting chills and sweats. I felt *awful*. With each progressing hour, my stomach was more and more upset, and I began to get a headache. They prescribed a heavy duty painkiller and gave me something to help me sleep. I fell asleep pretty easily but kept waking up every hour….thanks to all of the fluids I am still on.
About 4:00 am I wake up, with the worst migraine I have ever experienced in my life. The pain went from the base of my skull all the way up my head and behind my left eye. It felt like someone had jabbed an ice pick in my temple. I was simultaneously really nauseous, so rang the call bell for my nurse. By the time she came in, I was already in the bathroom, losing the remains of my dinner in the plastic bucket.
Back to bed, and trying so hard not to cry from the migraine pain, I told my nurse I needed something to give me relief. She called the doctor… who prescribed an additional anti nausea drug, and pain meds for the headache. A few hours later, when my mom arrived to visit, I was in the most excruciating pain from head and stomach. All the lights were off, shades drawn, and a cold washcloth on my eyes.
The doctors came in to do rounds, and after reviewing my symptoms and the drugs administered, they came up with a “cocktail” that would hopefully work.
Wow…. within 45 minutes I was sitting up and able to talk without feeling that horrible pain. After a few more minutes, I was feeling myself again. WOW. The rest of the day was spent relaxing, getting a CT scan of the head to rule out clots (there aren’t any), and finally getting to eat without wanting to yak. 🙂
Am hoping for the best tonight, and no new symptoms and side effects, please!!
And now, off to sleep for me…. fingers and toes all crossed.

Zofran is the drug I was given when I had surgery and had to have general anesthesia. It is widely used for those who have had chemo. I get violently ill from GA. Hang in there kiddo!
Thanks, girl! I’ve been on Zofran around the clock since admission 12 days ago. They think that might actually have contributed to the migraine, so the doctors discontinued it. I’m on a new anti-nausea that is helping a bit.
Each day will get better, hang in there! You have lots of love holding you up.
Thanks Karen!
There is nothing worse than hot and cold sweats, with a stomach ache and nausea….except migraines. So sorry you are going through this. Praying for you.
Thank you, Megan! Finally have some relief – your prayers and support are so special and important.
